Chapter Eight
The Arcane, Witch Hollow
ASTRA
The bell above The Arcane tinkled merrily, as I pushed into the shop. Inside, waves of magic washed over me even more powerfully than they had outside in the festival.
Except, at the Founders' Magical Festival, it'd felt like being at the happy stage of drunk, where you believed everyone was your best friend and dancing on a table with your bra around your head was a smart idea, (which had never happened to me, of course). But inside The Arcane, it was more like the sad end of the party, where you believed that you were going to die alone and that youâd have had much more fun staying in with a tub of chocolate fudge ice-cream (and wouldnât have made a tit of yourself by dancing on top of a table with a bra on your head).
I shuddered.
Satan wound around my ankles in comfort. His fur bristled, and I knew that he could sense it too: the wrongness of the magic in the air.
I peered into the shadowy shop, which was covered in velvet, black drapes like the owners were terrified of hard edges. The room looked empty. When I paced forward, my feet were sucked into the thick carpet. The ceiling was covered in chiffon, which was lit up by fairy lights. If it wasn't for the uncomfortable tingling at the back of my neck, which warned of danger, I'd have thought it beautiful.
Sweet Hecate, wasn't that true of so much of Witch Hollow?
Satan rested his paws on the base of a plinth. "Just soak in all that dark magic. On my tail, it's like being home. Now I know where I want to come for all my cursed object needs."
I blinked at the plinth, which was lit from beneath like an imploding star. The plinths were dotted throughout the shop, holding the wares.
"A shop specializing in only cursed objects You've got to be kidding." My eyes widened.
Satan grinned, gleefully. âDonât forget haunted ones.â
So, this was why my great-aunt's house was stuffed with so many dangerous treasures.
"They're just selling them, right?" I demanded.
Satan blinked. "What kind of capitalist are you? Do you want them to simply give them away? Mind you, the Great Satan wouldn't refuse cursed gifts."
I snorted. "You might want to rethink that policy."
Sin strode further into the shop. "Dragon?"
What was wrong with Sin? The magic must've affected him worse than me. This Deputy business was harder than I'd thought. I hadn't expected it to include babysitting the Sheriff.
"You're a dragon," I said, gently, gripping his arm. "And I'm a witch."
Sin stared at me.
Satan snickered. "And the Great Satan is a handsome and powerful demon familiar, who all should bow down before and..." I lifted my eyebrow at him, and he ducked his head. "Can we ignore that last bit?"
"Probably for the best."
"Earl?" Sin carefully pulled his arm away from my (possibly condescending) hold.
This was worse than I thought. Now Sin was reduced to questioning his own breeding.
"That's right." I patted his head.
